CEVS History

Throughout the years, Colorado Equine has pursued the tradition of providing the best equine veterinary care possible.

Colorado Equine Veterinary Services (CEVS) was established in July 2003 and was founded by Dr. Gregory J Brown, DVM, and Dr. Clinton E Unruh, DVM. Both veterinarians had been practicing equine veterinary medicine for 4 years prior to partnering to bring a high-quality equine practice, full of care and concern, to El Paso County.

Colorado Equine experienced rapid growth from the beginning. Initially, the business consisted of two personal trucks and a phone number. During a business lunch meeting, where we were establishing a strategy to introduce CEVS to the area, a local farrier asked for our clinic’s information. By the next day, both Veterinarians each had three appointments for people needing veterinary assistance for their horses. With patients in need, the primary concerns were having no equipment, no medications, or even vet boxes to keep supplies in to properly secure and store for future appointments. Fortunately, the small animal veterinarians in the area were very helpful in getting us some of the crucial supplies that we needed to take care of the initial patients that we had scheduled. From that point, we worked hard at getting our distributors setup and the veterinary truck boxes here.

When most of the equipment and drug supplies arrived approximately two weeks later, we already had full days on the appointment books. By this time we had also hired two full-time veterinary assistants/technicians to help us with our appointments in the truck. At this time, CEVS was still 100% mobile; we had forwarded the main telephone line to our cell phones and were answering phones and treating horses from the trucks.

By March 2004 we were busy enough that a full-time receptionist was needed to answer the phones and schedule the appointments for us. By September 2004 we were seriously considering adding another veterinarian as we were turning away some appointments because we could not get to them in a timely manner. Even though we were extremely busy, we wanted to be sure that there was enough work for three veterinarians to stay busy enough to make a living. Then in February 2005, a solo practitioner approached us on buying out his practice. After some careful consideration, we purchased the practice which confidently allowed us to employ a third veterinarian.

Throughout the last few years, Colorado Equine has pursued the tradition of providing the best equine veterinary care possible. We continue to educate ourselves on the most current medical treatments and diagnoses. We also keep on top of bringing more value to our clients by continuing to offer some of the newest in diagnostic equipment such as Radiography, Ultrasound, Endoscopy and laboratory equipment.

At this point in time CEVS has expanded from the completely equine, mobile, two veterinarian practice to a 3 veterinarian clinic with a full hospital capable of Intensive care and expanded care to include Cows, Pigs, Sheep, Goats, Dogs, and Cats. We are honored to continue to serve the greater portion of El Paso County and take our roles in the health of our patients extremely seriously with the goal of continued excellence.
