Externs & Interns

“I am a pre-veterinary student about to begin my senior year at Colorado State University. I am currently in the process of applying to veterinary school for fall 2016 at CSU. During my time at CEVS everyone was so welcoming and I really felt like I belonged as part of the team. Whether owners haul their horses in or the veterinarians go out on farm calls or emergencies, each horse is thoroughly looked over and the time is taken to explain what is going on. My favorite part has to be riding around in the veterinary trucks going out on farm calls. I enjoy riding along because it allowed me to gain the invaluable experience of seeing how horses react in their own environment. The doctors are amazing and so willing to discuss cases and walk me through what they thought was going on. Since I spent 7 weeks with them I felt that every week I was there, I was able to have a better idea of what to grab when doing a colic, lameness, leg bandage, etc. I would definitely recommend this externship to people that are not afraid of long hours and really getting the experience of how a successful equine veterinary practice operates.”

Sterling Schmitt2013 Extern Sterling Schmitt

“I am currently a 4th year vet student from North Carolina State, with an interest in Equine Medicine. I was able to spend 2 weeks at Colorado Equine Veterinary Services and it has been my favorite externship to date. Not only was I able to see a wide variety of cases (from colic to lameness to wound management, including a few “zebras”). I had the luxury of learning from 3 different and very talented doctors. They did an excellent job of involving me in all of the cases, and I was asked to really think about the cases as if I were they were mine to manage. I think this made for an excellent environment to learn in; perfect for re-enforcing concepts learned in the classroom. Not only do you get to work with top-class doctors, but the technicians and support staff are absolutely wonderful. They are not only knowledgeable and willing to help you, but they all make you feel right at home. I would highly recommend this externship to any Equine focused veterinary students (or pre-vet students looking to get a taste of Equine Vet Medicine).”
